Tony founded Gympie Aircraft Maintenance in June 1997 and is a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (L.A.M.E.) with 27 years experience.  He also holds a USA Airframe & Power plant (A&P) License, a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, a Recreational Aviation Australia (RAA) Level 2 & 4 License, GA pilots and RAA pilots License.

Tony joined the Royal New Zealand Air-Force (RNZAF) rnzaf.jpg straight from school in 1985, and after finishing 2 years Technical training was posted to the Kahu project which entailed converting Australian Navy Skyhawks A4G’s to air force A4K’s        .raaf-skyhawk.jpg     skyhawk.jpg

His next posting was to the 40 Squadron in Auckland, New Zealand working in Hercules C130H and Boeing 727-200’s, which included many exercises with the Aussies and Singaporeans including trips around the South Pacific.

In 1990 he left the RNZAF to go to Auckland University to finish off his Mechanical Engineering Diploma (which he had been working on part time whilst in the Air-force). After which he briefly became an over qualified “apple picker”!!

In 1991 he followed many ex. RNZAF personnel and moved to Australia to work on 747’s at Avalon on the section 41 and D checks.

He left Australia to do contract work in Europe and worked for various outfits on such aircraft as 747’s, 737, 727, 707,  DC8 & VC10  in Germany (at Lufthansa), Denmark, British Aerospace Filton, Manchester, Stansted and RAF Lasham.

In 1994 Tony  was introduced to GA and the smaller end of aviation. He found that being able to work on every aspect of the aircraft from nose to tail gave a lot more work satisfaction then being pigeon holed in a large Airline. After working at Archerfield for 2 years he moved to the Sunshine Coast hinterland near Gympie where he commuted to Caloundra Airport in his new position of Chief Engineer and Test Pilot for Skyfox Aviation, a small aircraft production factory.  Skyfox-300x199.jpg  P1000560-300x225.jpg

Although he enjoyed his time there, the company eventually went belly up, so looking for alternatives, he decided it was time to be the “master of his own destiny”, and hence Gympie Aircraft Maintenance was formed.

Gympie Aircraft Maintenance has been a busy and diverse business which is still going strong today.  We are now in our 21st year, with no end in site!!!
